[Chinese Culture Introduction]

Freehand Brush Work /写意画

traditional Chinese: 寫意; simplified Chinese: 写意; pinyin: Xiěyì

Freehand brush work is a genre of Chinese traditional painting which includes poem, calligraphy, painting, and seal. Xieyi literally means "writing ideas".[1] It was formed in a long period of artistic activities and promoted by the literati. The freehand brush work emphasizes the semblance in the spiritual aspect. This kind of artwork does not chase for the physical similarity and the cooperation of reality. And it might be the essence of freehand brush work that it mostly grasps the most obvious or essential spiritual characteristics.

Semi-Cursive Script / 行书

traditional Chinese:行書; simplified Chinese: 行书; pinyin: xíng shū,

Semi-cursive script,  also known as running hand script, is a style of calligraphy which emerged in China during the Han dynasty. The style is used to write Chinese characters and is abbreviated slightly where a character’s strokes are permitted to be visibly connected as the writer writes, but not to the extent of the cursive style.[2] This makes the style easily readable by readers who can read regular script and quickly writable by calligraphers who require ideas to be written down quickly. Chinese calligraphy is written using the ' Four Treasure of the Study ' 文房四宝, the writing brush, ink, ink stone and paper.

The style has its origin in ' the end of Eastern Han dynasty ' 东汉末年. One of the most notable calligraphers who used this style was ' Wang Xizhi ' 王羲之, known for his work ' Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection ' (Lantingji Xu兰亭集序), produced in 353 CE. This work remains highly influential in China, as well as outside of China where calligraphy using Chinese characters are still in practice, such as Japan and Korea.[3]
